Zaostrog
Zaostrog is a small, idyllic dalmatian resort, situated 20 km south of Makarska. Resort has about 400 permanent residents. Tourism is the main activity in summer, while in the fall the residents are occupied with olives, wine and fishing. Geographically mountain Viter dominates over the Zaostrog. Old Village Zaostrog is just few kilometers from the sea and it provides a fascinating view of the Pelješac peninsula. According to archaeological findings, Zaostrog was inhabited in Roman times, what many ancient monuments are testifying. Zaostrog was first mentioned 1494th in Croatian and Turkish. The old village Zaostrog has three churches, the Gothic St. Barbara, St. Rok from 17 century and new church Barbara from 1872.
The most famous cultural, religious and educational center of the Upper Makarska Riviera, is the Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary in Zaostrog. Visitors of the monastery has the oportunity to see museum, ethnological collection, gallery and a large library with over 30,000 titles, with significant works of the older Croatian literature.
